LSWA ALL-STATE GUIDELINES
|
The final score, team records and first and last names of players provides the basic information schools need to report to the media. Statistics on top scorers, rushers, pitchers, hitters is also needed. As a general rule, the home team is usually one that reports results, win or lose. Always make sure your team provides a roster that has first and last names when you travel. If you question whether the results of your contest have been reported, call and check. Also call to check on faxed results and be sure to place a phone number for a contact person on any faxes.
Here is a breakdown of districts and newspapers that will handle their LSWA All-State nominations. The contact person and LSWA officers also are listed below. All-State nominations should be presented to the representative listed for your districts. Other representatives are not allowed to nominate players outside their own area. Your representative must have a completed all-district team when he or she comes to the meeting, so please provide one for them in a timely fashion.
There are specific guidelines to follow when nominating players for any of the LSWA All-State teams. All-district teams should conform to LSWA standards.
Coaches should avoid selecting co-MVPs. When ties take place, resolve the issue by looking at head-to-head competition, team finish and, if all else fails, flip a coin. The LSWA is also providing some basic guidelines for selecting soccer and volleyball all-district teams.
FOOTBALL: Offense – two receivers, one tight end, two tackles, two guards, one center, one quarterback, three running backs, one placekicker. Defense – four down linemen, four linebackers, four defensive backs, one punter, one return specialist and one coach of the year. In the past two years we have added an athlete position to insure that a worthy athlete is not left off the all-state team. PLEASE NOTE: MVP must come from a player selected to the first-team. If MVP is not on first team they are not eligible for all-state honors.
BASKETBALL: The All-State team consists of five first-team players and five second-team players for both boys and girls basketball. All-district teams should conform to this format. The MVP must be included in the five-member first team. There should be no ties for MVP or for spots on the team. When teams tie, there are ways to break the tie. Do the same for players by comparing statistics, checking head-to-head competition and considering team finish.
SOFTBALL: For Classes 5A to 1A the All-State team consists of four pitchers, one catcher, one first baseman, a second baseman, a shortstop, a third baseman, three outfielders and five utility players. The MVP must appear on the first team to be eligible for all-state honors. In Classes B and C, the top 16 players, regardless of position are selected.
BASEBALL: The LSWA’s chapter chairmen select the teams in Classes 5A to 1A. The teams for Classes B and C are selected by an LSWA committee. In Classes 5A to 1A, the team consists of four pitchers, one catcher, a first baseman, a second baseman, shortstop, third baseman, three outfielders and five utility players. In Classes B and C, the top 16 players, regardless of position are selected.
SOCCER: In soccer, where the LSWA does not select an all-state team, all-district teams should consist of no more than seven offensive players and seven defensive players with goalies included in the seven defensive players. An outstanding offensive player, outstanding defensive player and coach of the year will be selected following selection of each team from the players voted to the team.
VOLLEYBALL: In volleyball, where the LSWA does not select an all-state team, all-district teams should consist of no more than 10 players. An outstanding player and coach of the year will be selected following selection of each team from the players voted to the team.
