Coaches Education & Certification Program
An individual shall not be considered a legal coach until he/she has attended the LHSAA/Non-Faculty Coach class. Serving in any capacity as a coach prior to attending the LHSAA/Non-Faculty Coach will deem the individual an illegal coach and the school subject to all fines and penalties.
Any individual wishing to become a Non-Faculty Coach coach MUST meet with the principal of the school that will be servicing to register for the class and fill out all the necessary paperwork.
- The cost of the class is $100.00
- The cost for late registration is $125.00 (MUST contact the LHSAA)
The payment for the Non-Faculty Coach class must accompany the Meeting Verification Form in order for an individual to be able to attend a class.
The Meeting Verification Form can only be accessed by LHSAA member school principals on their LHSAA member site.
Please refer to the Non-Faculty Coach class schedule and deadline dates that can be found on the LHSAA website under Coaches – Non-Faculty Coach – Class Dates
Once an individual has attended the Non-Faculty Coach class, he/she will have 30 calendar days from the date of the class that they attend to complete the online exam. The individual must pass the exam with a score of at least 70%. Failure to complete the exam and score at least 70% will deem the individual an illegal coach and he/she shall be removed from their coaching duties.
The above mentioned individual must also enroll and pass the National Federation of State High School Coaches Association’s Fundamentals of Coaching Course.
The cost of the course is $35.00 and is paid directly to the National Federation. The only form of payment accepted by the National Federation is a credit card.
The individual will have until May 31st of the school year that they begin coaching to complete the NFHS Fundamentals of Coaching Course. HOWEVER, beginning in the 2009-2010 school year, the Non-Faculty Coach individual will not receive their LHSCA coach’s card until the NFHS course has been completed and the NFHS class certificate number is entered by the principal on the member school website under the individual Non-Faculty Coach coaches’ information.
Membership to the LHSCA is completely optional
The certificate from the National Federation is to be kept on file at the school that the individual coach is servicing.
Failure to complete both the LHSAA/Non-Faculty Coach class and the NFHS Coaches Education Class shall result in the individual being considered and illegal coach and the school subject to all fines and penalties including being prohibited from performing coaching duties, at all levels of play, in all LHSAA schools, until he/she is in full compliance with the LHSAA Coaching Requirement Rule.
Once certified, Non-Faculty Coach individuals can serve as assistant coaches in any sport BUT can only serve as head coaches in the following sports: Baseball, Bowling, Cross Country, Golf, Gymnastics, Indoor/Outdoor Track and Field, Soccer, Softball, Swimming, Tennis, Class 1A in Volleyball, and Wrestling.
Schools must register all non-faculty coaches on their LHSAA member site.
If there are any questions concerning Non-Faculty Coach, please contact Assistant Commissioner, Rhonda McCullough at the LHSAA office.
